Going to university can be a time to make new friends, but many students can also feel lonely. And that's OK! If you're staying in university halls, it's probably the first time you've lived away from home, your friends and family, so feeling lonely is perfectly normal.
How to make new friends at university
The best way to make new friends is to spend time with your flatmates. They'll probably invite people they've met to hang out in your flat's communal area!
But if you live on your own, are already friendly with your flatmates, or just don't like them, going to society meetings, clubs and events is the best way to meet new people. It's OK to feel nervous when trying something for the first time. Also, if you don't enjoy it, then you can at least say you've tried it. And you have a funny story or two to tell your friends and family!
Once you've met someone or a group of people, invite them round to your flat. You can host games evenings or movie nights. It doesn't have to be expensive, even inviting some people you've met round for a game of UNO or cards breaks the ice!
What if my university doesn't have many clubs or societies?
Many smaller universities have fewer students, so there will be fewer events you can go to. However, there are still opportunities to meet new people!
If your university is small or doesn't have much of a social scene, see if there are events or activities going on outside of your uni. Clubs, events, activities -- even a simple running club can help you meet new people!
It might take some time to get to know people and make new friends. Remember that the more clubs, societies and social events you attend, the more likely you are to meet your kind of people and make new friends.
